About St Chads
St Chad’s Community Project was founded in 1990. We support local families to build a better community and work in partnership with local people to create opportunities for personal and social development. We offer high quality childcare, family support and educational opportunities.
We are based in Bensham, Gateshead but work with families across the Borough and beyond. Our services reach over 1500 people per year and directly supports over 1000 families, including those in need of emotional and practical support.
Last year, in 2015, St Chad’s celebrated 25 years of supporting families, young people and the communities of Bensham, Saltwell and Teams. During this time the Project has touched the lives of literally thousands of local people, providing much valued support to Bensham children at its Out of School Hours Club, holiday provision and play schemes, and provided hundreds of educational courses and activities to adults. The Project was established in response to growing concern that members of the local Bensham population had diminishing access to limited resources in relation to child care, recreational and training facilities. Funded by the Church Urban Fund, Urban Programme and other charitable bodies, the Project was initially based in a converted area of St. Chad’s Church. Over the years the Project has had several homes and has been housed in Liddell Terrace since 2005.
All families are welcome at St Chad’s and our Family Support team helps many parents struggling with fragile self confidence or low self esteem by providing emotional and practical help when they need it. Many families feel isolated and St.Chad’s provides a vital link to the community by offering access to a wide range of services at our centre or by working in partnership with others.
In 2011 the project was runner up in the Learning and Skills Council ‘Centre of Excellence’ awards and in 2012 was short listed as ‘Voluntary Organisation of the Year’ by the Gateshead Awards
